Sometimes when a horse is uncertain he will block you and/or move away. Here this gelding is not sure what I want and is doing both. You can see he wants to know what to do but until he does he is keeping himself safe by blocking me from his left side and moving backwards.
Notice as soon as he softens and yields his hindquarter to me – by stepping cleanly under himself, crossing over the hind foot – I turn and walk away. Walking away is taking the pressure off and rewarding for his yield. I let him have some time to think about why that happened before approaching again. Each time I approach he evades and blocks less and less. Once he understands, this behavior will stop.<
